During the course of the season, the Sabers set new school records in the Discus and the Steeplechase.
The 2022 Track & Field Team returned to action with dominant performances in both the AAIS and NYSAIS Championship meets. The team takes great pride in their depth, balance and ability to score points in bunches in all disciplines (sprints, relays, distance, mid-distance, jumps and throws) for true TEAM track. Spence captured the 2022 NYSAIS gold medal in the Discus, with a school record throw of 90’ 9”.
In 2019, the Sabers’ Varsity Track and Field Team won its fifth league title in the past six years, scoring a league record 210 points in the league’s championship meet. After breaking a school record that had stood since 1999, the Sabers set new school records in the 4x100m Relay in three consecutive meets (AAIS Championship, NYSAIS Championship and NY State Federation Championship). The Sabers finished 3rd at the NYSAIS State Championship with the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays earning gold medals at the NYSAIS Championship. Following a fourth place finish at the 2018 NYSAIS State Championships, the 2019 team sent 2 relay teams and an individual athlete to the NY State Federation Championship. In 2016, Spence claimed second in the AAIS, fifth at the NYSAIS Championship, and put two individual medalists on the podium at the NY State Federation Track Championship. 2022 marked the ninth year the team has had multiple student-athletes qualify for the NY State Federation Championship. At the 2015 NYSAIS Federation State Championship, the 4x400m relay team set a school record, breaking the magical four-minute mark.
Student-athletes train to compete in a variety of events. There is a continued focus on individual skill development as student-athletes strive for personal bests as well as scoring points for the team. Students will incorporate their skills into the team meet setting for a highly challenging and complete track and field experience. Practice will most often be in Central Park and Icahn Stadium at Randall’s Island. As is the case with all varsity teams, track is a Monday-through-Friday commitment and also has occasional weekend competitions. Athletes are required to train in running shoes and to compete in event-appropriate shoes.
